Jewish tombstones adorned with symbols and inscriptions carry information about the lives of specific people, families, and entire shtetls. It is difficult today to count how many matzevot were on the twelve hundred Jewish cemeteries in Poland before the war. Perhaps several hundred thousand, perhaps several million. Over four hundred Jewish cemeteries did not survive. They were converted into housing estates, sports fields, dumps…
