Professor of social sciences and historian; works as a professor at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Warsaw. He studies social memory, the history of Poland and Polish-German relations. Initiator and co-editor of the largest Polish-German academic-publishing project: “Polish-German Sites of Memory”. Founding director of the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin and long-standing co-chairman of the Joint Polish-German Textbook Commission; from 2011 to 2016 member of the Board of FWPN.
